A new, intentional and wholly functionally design for the interior bowl of tobacco-burning pipes, consisting of a larger (of larger circumference) bottom area of the bowl in relation to the top area of the bowl. The purpose is to better form a "furnace" effect within the bowl of the pipe, thus eliminating tongue-burning, throat-burning, hard or excessive draw, quantities of spittle from entering the bowl, and a "hot" to handle bowl with most pipes. The functional design, intentionally cut into the pipe's interior (or in other ways constructed) such that it will duplicate with some enhancement the action of a properly and well broken-in pipe with respect to draw of air/smoke, speed of tobacco burning, and heat containment/displacement.
Methods of manufacture include:
1. Adding material to the upper portion of the bowl chamber by means of inserts, burning specially formulated material onto the upper wall, fitting and/or adhering other materials to the upper portion of the pipe's interior wall.
2. Removing material from the lower portion of the bowl chamber by cutting, grinding, burning, etc., using various means and/or tools.
3. Initial construction of the pipe with the various points of the design integrally in mind.
The basis of the design may be used for construction of new pipes, or already constructed pipes may be altered with the basis of the design integrally in mind to perform functionally as a pipe constructed originally with the design as an inherent portion of the manufacturing process.
The design is meant to imitate the natural breaking-in form of a good smoking pipe, and can be attained by artificially breaking in a pipe by machine through mass process, as well as through other processes (as described above).
Other possible processes include fitting a series of baffles within the pipe bowl (situated horizontally) and/or placing a series of grooves within the interior bowl walls (see Fig. 2 and 3). A single baffle and/or groove is also possible.
